How it works
Welcome To The Ultimate Pool League
How the league works
We’re redefining what competitive pool looks like. Ultimate Pool League (UPL) blends tradition with innovation to create a modern, fast-paced, and fair competition format that’s built for today’s players and fans. Whether you’re here to enjoy weekly league nights with friends or chase a national championship, UPL offers a clear and exciting path from local competition to the national stage — all leading to a $100,000 first prize at the pinnacle of the season.
Every UPL match is built around a modern match system that makes the game faster, fairer, and more thrilling:
Match Clock: Each match runs on a 30-minute countdown, keeping play sharp and on schedule.
Shot Clock: Players have 30 seconds per shot (plus one 30-second extension per rack), ensuring nonstop pace and intensity.
UPscore Handicap System: Our advanced analytics-driven rating system balances competition by adjusting starting scores and tracking player performance.
Rundown-Style Matches: A groundbreaking format where higher-rated players must “chase down” and catch lower-rated opponents, creating intense comebacks and dramatic finishes.
This format transforms the playing experience. Lower-rated players start with an advantage, while higher-rated players must overcome the gap before time runs out — making every rack meaningful and every match exciting to the very last shot.
Team competition is at the heart of Ultimate Pool League. Whether you’re forming a new team with friends or joining an existing roster, UPL team play offers a social, competitive, and rewarding experience.
Team Size: Up to 8 players per roster
Weekly Matches: 5 players compete each night
Match Length: 30 minutes per match
Shot Clock: 30 seconds per shot (+1 extension per rack)
Team Composition Rules:
Max 2 players rated 600+ (only 1 over 700)
At least 1 player rated 450 or below must play each week
Teams compete weekly across three sessions per year. Points earned from weekly play determine standings, and the best teams advance to the Grand Final Qualifiers (GFQ). Winners there move on to the National Grand Finals, where they’ll battle for national titles, prize packages worth $6,000+, and a shot at the $100,000 top prize.
Every match in Ultimate Pool League earns teams and players points based on their performance — not just on wins and losses. This ensures that every rack matters and rewards consistency and skill throughout the season.
Match Win: +5 points for a match win.
Bonus Points: +1 point for each game won beyond any handicap deficit.
Match Loss: Teams still earn +1 point for each game won beyond the handicap, even in a loss.
Match Draw: Each team receives points equal to their final score. (e.g. A 5–5 draw = 5 points each.)
No Score Win: If a winning player finishes with a score of 0, no points are awarded for that match.
Maximum: A team can earn up to 20 points per individual match.
Team BYE: 20 points awarded.
Individual Forfeit: 8 points for weekly play / 20 points for GFQ or Grand Finals.
Team Forfeit: 25 points awarded.
At the heart of every UPL match is UPscore, our advanced rating and handicap system. Developed with analytics experts from Oxford University, UPscore:
- Tracks and updates player ratings in real time
- Levels competition using handicap scoring
- Powers the rundown-style format, ensuring every match is competitive
- Uses advanced integrity tools (including facial recognition at major events)
Your UPscore rating is more than a number — it’s your passport to higher divisions, bigger events, and greater rewards.
Weekly League Play: Compete in 14-week sessions and climb your division leaderboard.
Grand Final Qualifiers (GFQ): Top teams battle for a place at the Grand Finals.
National Grand Finals: The best players and teams from across the country compete for national titles and major prizes each November.
There’s no cap on the number of teams or players who can qualify — if you earn your spot, you’re in. And with a $100,000 first prize on the line at the National Grand Finals, the stakes couldn’t be higher. It’s the ultimate test of skill, teamwork, and composure — and your chance to etch your name in UPL history.
